Out on the Street by Jasmina Metwaly and Philip Rizk
Το Εργαστήριο για τα Αστικά Κοινά παρουσιάζει την προβολή της βραβευμένης ταινίας «Out on the Street» (2015) στην Ταινιοθήκη της Ελλάδος, στις 02 Οκτωβρίου 2018, στις 20:00, παρουσία των καλλιτεχνών και κινηματογραφιστών Jasmina Metwaly και Philip Rizk.
Στο πλαίσιο της προβολής, το Εργαστήριο για τα Αστικά Κοινά διοργανώνει την Τετάρτη 03 Οκτωβρίου ένα εργαστήριο με τους δημιουργούς στο Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο. Ο συνδυασμός δημοσίων προβολών και ακόλουθων εργαστηρίων αποτελεί μέρος της απόπειρας του Εργαστηρίου να διερευνήσει σύγχρονες καλλιτεχνικές πρακτικές όπου παράγονται και σχολιάζουν τη σύγκλιση μεταξύ τέχνης και κοινωνικής έρευνας
Το «Out on the Street» είναι μια ταινία για μια ομάδα εργατών από την Helwan, μία από τις γειτονιές της εργατικής τάξης της Αιγύπτου. Στην ταινία, εννέα άντρες συμμετέχουν σε ένα εργαστήριο υποκριτικής. Μέσα από τις πρόβες, αναδύονται ιστορίες εργασιακής αδικίας, αστυνομικής βίας, δικαστηρίων που κατασκευάζουν εγκληματικές κατηγορίες και αμέτρητες ιστορίες διαφθοράς και εκμετάλλευσης από τους εργοδότες τους. Σε ένα στούντιο στον τελευταίο όροφο με θέα την καρδιά του Καΐρου, ένας χώρος μεταξύ γεγονότων και μυθοπλασίας, οι συμμετέχοντες κινούνται “μέσα και έξω” από τους χαρακτήρες τους, καθώς διαμορφώνουν την επιτελεστικότητα που καθορίζει την καθημερινότητα τους. Η ταινία «Out on the Street» πλέκει σκηνές από το εργαστήριο υποκριτικής, μυθοπλαστικές δράσεις και πλάνα κινηματογραφημένα με το κινητό ενός εργάτη, που προορίζονται ως αποδεικτικά στοιχεία για τα δικαστήρια ώστε να σταματήσουν την καταστροφή του χώρου εργασίας του. Αυτή η υβριδική προσέγγιση στοχεύει στην ενεργοποίηση ενός συλλογικού φαντασιακού, τοποθετώντας τους συμμετέχοντες και τους θεατές μέσα σε έναν ευρύτερο κοινωνικό αγώνα.
Η ταινία έκανε την παγκόσμια πρεμιέρα της στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Βερολίνου το 2015 στο Forum Expanded ενώ την ίδια χρονιά παρουσιάστηκε στο Γερμανικό Περίπτερο στην Μπιενάλε Τέχνης της Βενετίας. επίσης προβλήθηκε στο FID Marseille ως επίσημη επιλογή του Ecrans Parallèles, στο MOMA (Νέα Υόρκη) στο πλαίσιο του Films from Here: Recent Views from the Arab World. Το 2015 απέσπασε το βραβείο καλύτερης ταινίας μεγάλου μήκους στο Φεστιβάλ Λατινοαραβικού Κινηματογράφου.

Βιογραφικά:
Με καταγωγή από την Αίγυπτο και την Πολωνία, η Jasmina Metwaly είναι καλλιτέχνης και σκηνοθέτης με έδρα το Κάιρο και το Βερολίνο και ιδρυτικό μέλος της κολεκτίβας Mosireen. Με εμφανείς επιρροές από την περφόρμανς και το θέατρο, η κινηματογραφική πρακτική της Metwaly αντλεί από διαδικασίες κοινωνικής έρευνας και επιχειρεί τη δημιουργία «εντάσεων» μεταξύ συμμετεχόντων και θεατών. Το έργο της έχει προβληθεί σε διεθνείς χώρους τέχνης και φεστιβάλ. Οι πρόσφατες ταινίες περιλαμβάνουν: We Are Not Worried in the Least, 2018; From Behind of the Monument, 2013; και Out on the Street, το 2015 που σκηνοθέτησε μαζί με τον Philip Rizk.
Ο Philip Rizk είναι σκηνοθέτης και συγγραφέας με έδρα το Κάιρο της Αιγύπτου. Η πρώτη του ταινία, το ντοκιμαντέρ μικρού μήκους «This Palestine Life» (2009) έκανε πρεμιέρα στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου του Λονδίνου. Το 2010 ολοκλήρωσε τη σειρά ταινιών μικρού μήκους Sturm, με θέμα ετα αγροτικά και βιομηχανικά ερείπια της Αιγύπτου. Με τη Jasmina Metwaly σκηνοθέτησε την ταινία μεγάλου μήκους «Out on the Street», που έκανε πρεμιέρα στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ του Βερολίνου το 2015. Είναι μέλος της κολλεκτίβας Mosireen.

The Laboratory for the Urban Commons presents the screening of the awarded film “Out on the Street” (2015) at the Greek Film Archive, on Tuesday 02 October 2018, at 20:00, in the presence of the artists and filmmakers Jasmina Metwaly and Philip Rizk. This screening of the film in Greece, with both English and Greek subtitles, is part of the Laboratory‘s public program on Artistic Practices
“Out on the Street” is a film about a group of workers from one of Egypt’s working class neighborhoods, Helwan. In the film, nine working class men are participating in an acting workshop. Through the rehearsals, stories emerge of factory injustice, police brutality, courts that fabricate criminal charges and countless tales of corruption and exploitation by their capitalist employers. On a rooftop studio, overlooking the heart of Cairo ¬presented as a space between fact and fiction¬, the participants move in and out of character as they shape the performance that engage their daily realities. “Out on the Street” interlaces scenes from the workshop, fiction performances and mobile phone footage filmed by a worker intended as proof for the courts to stop the destruction of his workplace. This hybrid approach aims to engage a collective imaginary, situating the participants and spectators within a broader social struggle.
The world premiere of the film took place in Berlin International Film Festival 2015 in Forum Expanded. It was later exhibited at the German Pavillion of Venice Biennale in the same year. It screened at FID Marseille, 2015 as an Official Selection in Ecrans Parallèles, in MOMA as part of Films from Here: Recent Views from the Arab World and won the Best Feature Film Award at the Latin Arab Film Festival, 2015.

Directors’ Short Bio:
Born to an Egyptian father and a Polish mother, Jasmina Metwaly is a Cairo-Berlin-based artist and filmmaker, and founding member of Mosireen collective. She works in video and film, and has recently started drawing again. Rooted in performance and theater, her film and video work is focused on process-based practices that have a social function generating tension between participants and audiences. Metwaly’s work has been exhibited at international art venues and festivals. Recent films include We Are Not Worried in the Least, 2018; From Behind of the Monument, 2013; and Out on the Street, 2015 which she directed together with Philip Rizk.
Philip Rizk is a filmmaker and writer based in Cairo, Egypt. His first film is the short documentary «This Palestinian Life” (2009) premiered at the London International Film Festival. In 2010 Rizk completed the short film series “Sturm”, a two channel articulation that explores rural and industrial ruin in Egypt featured at IFFR. With Jasmina Metwaly he directed the feature film “Out on the Street,” that premiered at the Berlinale in 2015. He is a member of the Mosireen video collective.
