In the Last Days of the City by Tamer El Said

Το Εργαστήριο για τα Αστικά Κοινά παρουσιάζει την προβολή της πολυβραβευμένης ταινίας In the Last Days of the City στην Ταινιοθήκη της Ελλάδος, στις 21 Ιουνίου 2018, στις 20:30, παρουσία του σκηνοθέτη Tamer El Said. Η προβολή αυτή αποτελεί την επίσημη πρεμιέρα της ταινίας στην Ελλάδα και την επίσημη έναρξη του νέου δημόσιου προγράμματος του Εργαστηρίου για τα Αστικά Κοινά, και θα προβληθεί με Αγγλικούς και Ελληνικούς υπότιτλους.

Το In the Last Days of the City αφηγείται την ιστορία ενός κινηματογραφιστή από το Κάιρο, τον οποίο υποδύεται ο Khalid Abdalla (United 93, Το Τετράγωνο), καθώς αγωνίζεται να συλλάβει το πνεύμα μιας πόλης που βρίσκεται σε ένταση, ενώ διακινδυνεύει την ίδια του τη ζωή. Γυρισμένη στο Κάιρο, τη Βηρυτό, τη Βαγδάτη και το Βερολίνο κατά τη διάρκεια των δύο χρόνων πριν από το ξέσπασμα της επανάστασης στην Αίγυπτο, οι πολυεπίπεδες ιστορίες της ταινίας αποτελούν μια οπτικά πλούσια εξερεύνηση της φιλίας, της μοναξιάς, της απώλειας και της ζωής στις πόλεις, όπως αυτές διαμορφώνονται κάτω από τις σκιά του πολέμου και της αντιπαλότητας.

Η παγκόσμια πρεμιέρα της ταινίας πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου του Βερολίνου το 2016, όπου και έλαβε το βραβείο Caligari. Από τότε, η ταινία έχει προβληθεί σε πάνω από εκατόν τριάντα φεστιβάλ ανά τον κόσμο, αποσπώντας περισσότερα από δώδεκα διεθνή βραβεία, στη Γαλλία, τη Γερμανία, τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, την Πολωνία, την Ιταλία, τη Ρωσία, την Αργεντινή και την Τουρκία. Την παγκόσμια πρεμιέρα της ταινίας διαδέχτηκε η θερμή υποδοχή της από διεθνείς και Άραβες κριτικούς. Έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως «η σημαντικότερη ταινία στον αιγυπτιακό κινηματογράφο, εάν όχι σε ολόκληρο τον αραβικό κινηματογράφο, εδώ και πολλά χρόνια» από τον πρώην αρχισυντάκτη του Cahiers du Cinéma, Jean-Michel Frodon, σε άρθρο του για το Slate.

Το In the Last Days of the City είναι μια ταινία μέσα σε μια ταινία, ένα στοιχειωτικό και συνάμα λυρικό χρονικό των πρόσφατων ετών στον αραβικό κόσμο, όπου οι επαναστάσεις μπορούσαν με μια κίνηση να προκαλούν ταυτόχρονα την ελπίδα για αλλαγή και περαιτέρω αστάθεια. Όσο περισσότερο αλλάζουν τα πράγματα, τόσο παραμένουν τελικώς τα ίδια. Ο Khalid Abdalla (Χαρταετοί Πάνω από την Πόλη, Το Τετράγωνο) αναλαμβάνει τον πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο στο φιλόδοξο ντεμπούτο μεγάλου μήκους του Tamer El Said, το ρόλο ενός κινηματογραφιστή στο Κάιρο, ο οποίος προσπαθεί να συλλάβει το πνεύμα των καιρών στην πόλη του, ενώ γύρω του ο κόσμος αλλάζει – από την προσωπική αγάπη και την απώλεια μέχρι την πτώση του καθεστώτος Mubarak. Καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της ταινίας, οι φίλοι του μοιράζονται υλικό και ιστορίες από το Βερολίνο, τη Βαγδάτη και τη Βηρυτό, συνθέτοντας έναν ισχυρό και πολυεπίπεδο στοχασμό πάνω στη συντροφικότητα, τον απτό δεσμό μας με τις πόλεις και το νόημα της πατρίδας. Ο Tamer El Said είναι κινηματογραφιστής, γεννημένος στο Κάιρο το 1972, όπου ζει και εργάζεται. Σπούδασε σκηνοθεσία στο High Cinema Institute στο Κάιρο και δημοσιογραφία στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Καΐρου. Έχει γυρίσει πολλά ντοκιμαντέρ και ταινίες μικρού μήκους, τα οποία έχουν λάβει αρκετά τοπικά και διεθνή βραβεία. Το 2007, ο Tamer ίδρυσε την εταιρεία Zero Production με σκοπό την παραγωγή ανεξάρτητων ταινιών. Μεταξύ άλλων, έχει ιδρύσει το Cimatheque – Alternative Film Centre στην Αίγυπτο. Το In the Last Days of the City αποτελεί την πρώτη του μεγάλου μήκους ταινία.

Στο πλαίσιο της προβολής, το Εργαστήριο για τα Αστικά Κοινά διοργανώνει την Παρασκευή 22 Ιουνίου ένα εργαστήριο με τον Tamer El Said. The Laboratory for the Urban Commons presents the screening of the multi-awarded film In the Last Days of the City (2016) at the Greek Film Archive, on Thursday 21 June 2018, at 20.30, in the presence of director Tamer El Said. This will be the premiere screening of the film in Greece, with both English and Greek subtitles, and the inauguration of the new public program of the Laboratory for the Urban Commons.

In the Last Days of the City tells the fictional story of a filmmaker from downtown Cairo, played by Khalid Abdalla (United 93, The Square), as he struggles to capture the soul of a city on edge while facing the loss of his own life. Shot in Cairo, Beirut, Baghdad, and Berlin in the period of two years prior to the outbreak of the revolution in Egypt, the film’s multi-layered stories are a visually rich exploration of friendship, loneliness, loss, and life in cities shaped by the shadows of war and adversity.

The world premiere of the film took place in Berlin International Film Festival 2016, where it received the Caligari Film Prize. Since then, the film has been invited to over 130 festivals around the world, receiving more than 12 international awards, in France, Germany, USA, Poland, Italy, Russia, Argentina, and Turkey. Following its world premiere, the film has been well received by international and Arab critics. It has been called “the most important film in Egyptian cinema, if not Arab cinema, in a long time” by the former editor-in-chief of Cahier du Cinema, Jean-Michel Frodon, in an article for Slate.

In the Last days of the City is a film within a film that is a haunting, yet lyric chronicle of recent years in the Arab world, where revolutions seemed to spark hope for change and yield further instability in one stroke. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Khalid Abdalla (The Kite Runner, The Square) plays the protagonist of Tamer El Said’s ambitious feature debut, a filmmaker in Cairo attempting to capture the zeitgeist of his city as the world changes around him—from personal love and loss to the fall of the Mubarak regime. Throughout the film, friends send footage and share stories from Berlin, Baghdad and Beirut, creating a powerful, multi-layered meditation on togetherness, the tactile hold of cities and the meaning of homeland. Shot in 2008 and completed in 2016, the film explores the weight of the cinematic image as record and storytelling in an on-going time of change. *Synopsis (from New Directors/ New Films, New York).

Tamer El Said is a filmmaker born in Cairo in 1972, where he lives and works. He studied filmmaking in the High Institute of Cinema – Cairo and journalism in Cairo University. He went on to make many documentaries and short films, which received several international and local awards. Tamer founded Zero Production in 2007 with the aim to produce independent films. He also founded, among others, Cimatheque – Alternative Film Centre in Egypt. In the Last Days of the City is his first feature film.

In the context of the screening, the Laboratory for the Urban Commons is organising a workshop on Friday 22 June 2018 with Tamer El Said.
